Is 256GB SSD storage really enough for college?
512GB SSD is the modern target baseline for Windows laptops because Windows OS, updates, and standard engineering IDEs/software consume ~100GB out of the box. A 256GB drive will fill up by your second year. However, 256GB is acceptable only on a base variant MacBook since macOS handles storage compression and virtual memory swaps extremely efficiently. Overall, never buy less than 256GB on a Mac and 512GB on Windows.
What kind of display specs should I look for?
Try to get a display with a better resolution and good brightness (at least 300 to 400 nits). A brighter display is critical for reading code clearly under library or lecture hall lights. You don't need to overpay for OLED panels or extreme refresh rates (unless gaming). Most of your work will be indoors, so standard matte IPS displays are completely fine — don't blow your budget running after extreme screen specs.
Is a high-quality 1080p webcam really required?
This is a common myth. While a 1080p camera is great, webcams are often the first place manufacturers compromise to save costs. If you get great specs otherwise, feel free to compromise on the webcam. Is laptop screen size going to be a portability issue?
Yes, absolutely. 13.3-inch or 14-inch screen sizes are preferred because they are highly convenient, portable, and fit easily on small lecture desks. Carrying a 15.6-inch or 16-inch gaming laptop around campus daily is heavy and takes extra physical effort. Stick to 13-14 inches for a lightweight experience, unless you need a larger display for CAD work or coding.
Should I check with college seniors before buying a MacBook?
Yes, definitely! While macOS is fantastic, some specific engineering branches (like Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical) rely heavily on Windows-only legacy simulation software. Ask seniors in your branch if macOS is completely convenient for the curriculum. If it is, Mac is a fantastic investment. If not, stick with a reliable Windows machine.
